Sean Connery was offered the role of Gandalf but turned it down as he just didn't get the entire idea of the film. Orlando Bloom did most of his own stunts for the film, and broke a rib in the process and Christopher Lee was the only member of the cast to have actually met J R R Tolkein.

Now if you think the Lord of the Rings trilogy was a financial success for the film studio, it also pumped an estimated $200,000,000 into the New Zealand economy with the government there even creating a Minister of Lord of the Rings to fully exploit every commercial opportunity the film presented.
